'Take A Vacation' Listening Party 10/16

I was fortunate enough to be at Angels and Kings last night for the listening party! I drove from northern CT through rain and snow at lightspeed after work to beat rush hour traffic, nearly peed myself because there was no time for bathroom stops, made my train by 2 minutes after almost getting back onto the gridlocked highway and being honked at maliciously for cutting people off to avoid this...

...and was it all worth it? You bet it was!!

I got to Angels and Kings at 7:30 and there were literally ten people there, lol, a big difference from when Brendon played in August and the place was jam-packed. So I sat by my lonesome with my two beers against the wall and watched as people slowly trickled in. To those who have never been there before, it's actually a pretty small, laid back place, just a bar with a cool ambience and some comfy seats. The infamous spot for mugshots is in a little inlet that shares space where you wait for the bathrooms, two separate single stalls that ask no gender of you and are so covered in scrawl and marker that you can't see yourself in the mirror.

They played the Butch Walker album first, around like 8:15, at a volume much louder than the stock music they'd been playing before, to my happiness as the number of people had tripled and conversations were getting boisterous. I don't really know Butch Walker, I'd never heard him before, so all I can say is that the music was pretty good. Though his voice was much whinier than I'd expected from a man named Butch!

So I'm just sitting there chilling when I look up (I'm facing the entranceway) and there's Ryan!! With Alex, of course, and a few friends in tow whom I didn't recognize. They just stroll in and it's no big whoop-de-do, which is when I realize most of the people there did not come for the listening party, it's really just their neighborhood bar. Ryan was wearing his little brown suit. He looks healthier, not as skinny as he was last year, with his round cheeks and gorgeous locks :) Alex had his cape on! Loved it. Jon was absent, but I wasn't expecting him to be there as I'm sure he's in Chicago right now...unless he's moved to Cali as well? I can never tell with that elusive man.

It was so hard not to stare at Ryan the whole time! He's just so captivating. But I did my best. He knew lots of people there and spent the time 'schmoozing'.

A little before nine I heard the beginning of "Change" and I knew this was it! So that will be the first song on the album. There were quite a few people there now and I kept re-positioning myself to find where I could get the best sound, closing my eyes so I could hear better.

"Take A Vacation" is a very appropraite title for the album. I felt like I was on vacation! But it's so much more straightforward than the other work he's done. It doesn't sound like they're trying too hard or trying to prove something, it really is just a collection of fun pop songs, GOOD fun pop songs at that! Very, very pop-y. I wouldn't be surprised if critics compared this album to The Beach Boys like they continually compared Pretty Odd to The Beatles...though if that comparison makes anyone feel iffy, I'll let you know I don't particularly care for The Beach Boys and I loved the songs I heard last night. They're not cheesy in the slightest, but they are very lighthearted.

For the songs individually, I don't remember how many there were. There are at least two, maybe three, which are definitely not Ryan's voice- I say that because I cannot ever hear just Jon's voice on anything Panic has done and I don't want to say for sure that it's him, but uh, I'm 99.9% positive, so that's cool! One song was all about Cape Town, very twangy and mellow. All the songs blurred together for me, with the background noise- they are not radically different from each other, but yet they don't all sound the same but they do have the same sound to them, if that makes any sense? The last track, gah, I can't remember what it goes like but there were tears in my eyes. It was just that beautiful. It's an album that will make your heart swell and your hips shake!

And then it was 9:30 and I'd had my four beer maximum and was ready to go home, lol. But not without speaking to him, of course, and I managed to catch him alone as he was waiting in line for the bathroom. He was utterly gracious and so sweet, just as always. I finally got to shake his hand, something I've been waiting for which was a big no-no at meet and greets. Told him how much I loved the album, how amazingly excited I am for the music he makes, what a great talent he has, on and on because I never know what to say and I always want to say so much! I just really wanted to convey to him how much we truly love this music and how excited his fans are for this new band. He seemed very happy to hear all this :) Asked him about being under contract and he's a free man now, so they're really just hunting for labels at this point. He said the album should be out beginning of next year and he's very excited about it!!

And that's it. I apologize I have no media to share. There was no way I could've taken audio without it being completely drowned out by people talking. And I didn't want to take any pictures because, well, it's a dark bar and flash would've been really obvious and I didn't want to look like a creeper, lol. The end.

Oh my god, awesome review. Thank you for sharing! Reading this review just makes me even MORE excited for it. And I didn't know I could get even more excited for it! Omg! It sounds like this album is gonna be pretty great, which I figured. Haha. Because its Ryan and Jon! Yeah, so thank you so much for sharing! Ah, I'm so spazzy, happy and possibly hyper now. Lmao. (I just really love this band, so I'm just all omghappy now).

Thank you again! And it seems like you had fun and everything, that is great! And lucky you got to meet Ryan! :D

You went and said hi! Well done : )

I just had to! He's very approachable. I have a friend who is obsessed with Bruce Springsteen and I feel so blessed to be obsessed with a musician I can actually go up and talk to in public!
Oct. 16th, 2009 04:54 pm (UTC)
This makes me really happy ♥
Also, Jon singing!!!! \o/
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:19 am (UTC)
He has a lovely voice!
Oct. 16th, 2009 04:58 pm (UTC)
A song about Cape Town? D'awww. And I am disproportionately excited at them being free of a label, I won't lie :D.

Thanks so much for this, I'm already so excited now. Wish I could've been there, but your review brought it to life ;). Thanks for sharing!
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:22 am (UTC)
It is very exciting that they're unsigned- while I was waiting when Butch Walker was on, I was actually sitting next to a record scout who claimed he'd already heard the album, the bastard! Lol, they left before TYV came on though, so idk, he could've just been trying to get into my dress, lol... glad I could make you feel like you were there, I wish we all could've gone!

You're so very welcome!! It's so nice to hear Jon on the album...I think there was just too much talent in Panic for one band, honestly, now they all get more of a chance to shine!
Oct. 16th, 2009 05:16 pm (UTC)
It's really nice to know that it's a fun record. I definitely need some of that in my life.
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:25 am (UTC)
Aww well I hope it will infuse some fun into your life! And hey, maybe you can take a vacation with all that fun, lol...

Hi, darling! I LOVED your review! Thanks! :D I was expecting for someone to put something up about yesterday!
I'm excited about Jon singing *w*

Can I borrow your review for a translation into spanish? I will of course give you all the credit, because I live in Argentina and is obvious that i wasn't there haha. It's for my Panic news blog. It's okay?

Thank you very much again.
Oct. 17th, 2009 03:04 am (UTC)
You're so very welcome! I would be delighted if you translated this into Spanish so everyone (well, the English and Spanish speakers lol) can share in what went on last night.

I'm excited about Jon singing too!

You're very welcome! It will be worth the wait to hear it :)
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:07 pm (UTC)
Thanks, I've been in two minds whether or not to get excited about it. I just ignorantly assumed it was going to be a boring old Beatles wannabe album. I think I'm going to be a little more open minded about it now. Glad you had a good night. x
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:28 am (UTC)
I feel like 'boring' and 'Beatles' should never be in the same sentence, lol. Yes, definitely keep an open mind and I think you will be quite pleased when you hear it :)
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:08 pm (UTC)
this made my heart happy. this split really does seem like it was best for all parties involved. and like zack said oh so long ago, now we get two albums! :) okay i'll stop reminiscing and being melodramatic.

thank you for taking the time to tell us about it!
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:31 am (UTC)
You're very welcome, I'm glad I had the opportunity to share my experience with everyone!

I wholeheartedly believe the split was best for everyone. Using yet another Bealtes reference, there really was too much talent in that one little band. I think everyone will have the chance to flourish in their talents now and they are all happier for it!
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:12 pm (UTC)
This was a wonderful review. I'm so glad that you enjoyed it and got to have a few words with Ryan. Thanks for sharing. :)
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:32 am (UTC)
You're very welcome! I'm glad I got to have words with Ryan as well :) And I literally had been waiting four years to shake that boy's hand, lol.
Oct. 16th, 2009 06:24 pm (UTC)
ugh, i just want to make everyone that has ever disliked him read this and see if their opinions of him change. he's such a sweetheart :(

i'm so glad you had a good time! i really hope most of their shows on tour are like how you describe the listening party: laid back and chill (except if they're 21+ i need to start making my fake ID asap)

what you said about the last song, gah! i simply cannot wait to hear it and swoon over his lovely little words :)

thanks for sharing!
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:41 am (UTC)
I do to! I nearly lost a friend who bad-mouthed Ryan so harshly after the break up that I kind of got really upset at her, and now even though we're at a strict don't-talk-about-TYV policy, I kind of want to make her read this and say HA!

For your sake and others' I hope they play all ages shows. They probably will since they want to spread their music to as many as possible...though I admit it was really nice to see him so relaxed in a setting without fourteen year-old girls giving him marriage proposals! So maybe 18+ would be good? 16+ with a reference? Lol.
Oct. 16th, 2009 07:51 pm (UTC)

Just kidding. a little

But SO fucking jealous rn. But I wouldn't have had the guts to go up to him, because I'm a chickenshit. BUT I COMMEND YOU. *bows at feet*
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:36 am (UTC)
It may be the wine but I THREW MY HEAD BACK AND LAUGHED at your comment!!

It's definitely a little of both ;)

Ah, if you ever get the chance to go up to him, you must! He's very approachable and very sweet. Plus, I think when Bden was there in August and I literally stalked him into the next bar and sat two stools down and struck up a conversation, and then drunkenly harrassed Andy Hurley later in the evening, I lost all fear of approaching celebrities, lol. They really are just us, after all. Except they make amazing music and are gorgeous as fuck with curly tendrils and flawless skin and...

Yeah, I may have a bit of that Jesus light in me now, lol.

I found my way over here from young_veins too. Thanks so much for sharing with us about the event! I'm even more excited for the new album now.

I'm glad to hear that Ryan was able to work out his contractual issues with FBR/DD and he and Jon are now free to shop the album out to other labels like they wanted to.

Can't wait to hear Jon singing lead on a few songs! We have heard him sing a little bit... in the American Valley short film, a tiny bit on the BTS for the 9ITA video, etc. and I really like his voice.

Also, since you brought it up... when I talked to Ryan at the George Harrison tribute show last month, he mentioned that Jon was in Chicago at the time, and I said "he's never going to move out here, is he?" Ryan replied, "No. I keep trying to get him to, but he likes his suburbs too much." So yes, Jon still lives in Chicago, apparently in a suburb.

Anyway... thanks again for sharing!
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:45 am (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying the Jon Walker residential situation, lol. I can never remember where he is! And yes, he did sing on the American Valley film, you're right! On the album, for some reason, I always mix his and Spencer's voices up, though I'm not even sure if Spencer sings on the album...I think Jon just sounds like I think Spencer should :P

I'm so glad you got to go to the George Harrison tribute! I was jealous, because I used to live in SoCal (I will again soon, though not soon enough!) and wanted to be there so bad, I'll bet that was a blast.

Oct. 17th, 2009 02:47 am (UTC)
I hope he takes what I said to heart! I always want to give him a hug when the haters start bad mouthing him, because you know he sees some of those things and it just isn't fair, he's such a sweet boy.

I have no fear when it comes to talking to Ryan- he may have a killer smile but I would die happy ;)

You're very welcome! I'm glad I was fortunate enough to go so I could report back to all of you!
Oct. 16th, 2009 09:46 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing this. I know he sees all the ugly teenie nastiness aimed at him on the internet so I'm glad he got to receive something positive in person.

I do hope that's Jon singing. I'm looking forward to this album.

Oct. 17th, 2009 02:55 am (UTC)
It has to be Jon, I just didn't want to say either way unless I knew for sure in case I was randomly wrong and it was actually Ryan singing in an entirely different way or something, lol, but it didn't sound like Ryan at all.

I hope his memory is filled with positive messages from fans so he can ignore the haters. Their hatred has no citations, but our love does- his music is damn good!!
Oct. 16th, 2009 10:14 pm (UTC)
Thanks so much for this! It's lovely to hear what went down and what the vibe of the new music is. And hearing that Ryan is all happy makes me one happy girl as well!
Oct. 17th, 2009 02:56 am (UTC)
Doesn't his smile just brighten your cloudiest day?
You're very welcome, I'm glad I got the opportunity to share!
Oct. 16th, 2009 10:24 pm (UTC)
It's so lovely to hear that he sounds and looks happy. Because regardless of anyone saying he enjoys all the hate leveled at him (and to some degree, I suspect he may have found some of it amusing) it's gotta suck seeing people who were once apparently fans now declaring you the spawn of Satan.

I am thrilled that they've got all the legal stuff with his contract sorted out, but slightly bummed that it means we probably won't get the album til next year (I know it's not that long away but still). I was already fairly sure I'd like it, your review just confirmed my expectations.
Oct. 17th, 2009 03:01 am (UTC)
Now that I want the album even more, after that tease of hearing it once, 2010 seems like a decade away! At least all these silly holidays should make it go by fast, right? I hope!

I'm sure he's amused by some of it (I certainly am) but you're right, it must hurt to have so many people turn on you just because you wanted to stay true to your heart and your music. I hope the haters fade away over time and TYV gains their own following separate from Panic. Right now we're still pretty connected with each other, but after they release Take A Vacation they should stand on their own more. After all, no one outside of bandom knows who the hell Ryan Ross is when I repeatedly mention him to them, lol.
